A thin sheet of rolled out porcelain has large oak trees with birds amongst the foliage individually carved and printed so that when highfired illuminates the following story.
The inspiration for the hand made Porcelain Songbird Lamp is from an ancient Persian poem by Farid ud-Din Attar called The Conference of the Birds.
Birds of the world hold a conference to search for their king, as they have no leader. Under the guidance of the hoopoe the wisest of them, suggests they should find the legendary Simorgh, a mythical Persian bird roughly equivalent to the western phoenix.
The birds start a difficult and challenging journey through seven valleys which represent the stations that that must be passed through to realize enlightenment - Yearning – Love - Spiritual truths - Detachment - Unity - Bewilderment - Selflessness and Oblivion.
Each bird has a special significance, each of whom represents a corresponding human fault which prevents the attainment of enlightenment. In each of these stages, there are several events by which the birds learn different lessons.
One by one, they drop out, each offering an excuse as to why they are unable to endure the journey. The guiding bird is the hoopoe, while the nightingale symbolizes the lover. The parrot is seeking the fountain of immortality, not God and the peacock symbolizes the "fallen soul" who is in alliance with Satan.
Finally, when the diminished group of thirty birds reach the legendary dwelling place of the Simorgh, all they find is a lake in which they see their own reflection.
